Aston Martin DB6 Mark 2 Volante (1969 - 1970)

The DB6 Mark 2 Volante shared all of the modifications of the Mark 2 version of the coupe. The most easy to spot are the wheel arch extensions to house the DBS type wire wheels. Also the front seats are taken from the DBS and feature pleats as opposed to the 'cross' stitching on the Mark 1 car. The hood was totally power operated using a combination of electric motors and hydraulic pumps.

HRH The Prince of Wales was extremely fortunate to receive a Mark 2 Volante as a 21st Birthday present from his mother, Queen Elizabeth the Second; a car he still owns to this day.

db6 mark 2 volante interior db6 mark 2 volante with vantage engine A very rare and highly sort after car, only 38 examples were ever built during a production run of just over a year. This example, photographed at the last Coys Festival Silverstone, Summer 2000, is one of the very rare Vantage engined cars (triple Weber carbs) with a 5 speed manual transmission. Whilst most examples had automatic transmission, only 9 manual transmission Vantage cars ever left the factory, making this one of the most desirable examples of all.
The last Volante was produced in late 1970 leaving something of a void as no other convertible car was available from Aston Martin. This unfortunate situation was brought about by the belief that safety concerns (mainly in the US) would legislate against open top cars. This fortunately proved unfounded, although it was to be another seven and a half years until the V8 Volante became available. Needless to say that demand for the open top DB4, 5 and 6 remained strong, many examples change hands for sums in excess of £100,000 even today.
