Aston Martin DB4 Convertible (1961 - 1963)

A convertible version of the DB4 wasn't available until the London Motor Show of 1961. Whilst the styling of the saloon was all the work of Touring of Milan, the convertible was styled totally in house by Aston Martin themselves. Whilst the introduction of the convertible was simultaneous with the series 4 saloon, is does appear that all examples have the longer body associated with the series 5 cars (the greater distance between the rear wheel arch and rear bumper is indicative of a length of 457cm - 15 feet).  If one looks at the chassis numbers  it also appears that all the cars are 'Series 5'. But the earlier cars do have typical series 4 front indicators. All examples have opening front quarterlights, a feature not seen on the saloon until the introduction of the DB6.

A few convertibles were supplied with the optional factory hardtop, a £200 option offered in 1963. These are very rarely seen indeed but I was fortunate to spot this example, in the rain at the Newport Pagnell factory in May 2004. It's parked just outside the recently opened AM Heritage restoration centre, a new department attached to Works Service.

Only 70 of these most elegant of cars were ever built out of a total DB4 production of 1110 cars.  Many cars were fitted with the Special Series engine (see DB4 Vantage) but only two received the faired-in  headlights of the Vantage and one of these cars had the GT engine and thus both are totally unique.

Needless to say, the DB4 convertible is a very rare and beautiful car; when examples reach the market, the values most certainly reflect this - anticipate a price premium of upto 100% over an equivalent DB4 saloon.
