75th 24 Heures du Mans - page 6

16th/17th June 2007

Sunday - the race stained cars motor on towards the finish

Midnight and as the air cools the pace goes on relentless. Shortly after 59 spins and sustains minor rear end damage which is repaired during a brief spell in the pit garage. I have a two hour stint in the busy pit lane. Pit stop rules only allow for four people to work on the car at once - the ACO strictly police this. Firstly the fuel is replenished - one on the fuel hose, one on the vent hose while two technicians clean the screen. Once fuelled the wheel men take over if necessary and change all the wheels is almost an instant. Very quickly the headlights come on the the car re-enters the race, spluttering noisily down the pit lane whilst the engine bounces off the rev limiter.

Shortly before down and David Brabham sets the fastest lap in GT1 in 009. Shortly before 7 in the morning, Johnny Herbert in 007 has an off at the Porsche curves and looses the lead after having to spend 8 minutes in the pits. 007 continues with a mass of green and black gaffer tape on the front bodywork. The another calamity for 007 when Tomas Enge spins following a puncture.

With just two hours remaining the heavens open with the heaviest rain of the entire week. After a number of spins, the safety cars are deployed. The track is totally waterlogged and the positions are frozen. In point of face, Le Mans has never finished under the safety cars and 2007 is no exception. With just 12 minutes remaining, the safety cars are pulled off and all cars carefully so carefully sprint for the finish

Aston Martin Win at Le Mans

After 24 hours, David Brabham brings 009 over the finsh line, first in GT1 and a brilliant 5th overall and creates Aston Martin history.  009 has covered 2904.75 miles and 343 laps at an average speed of 121 mph. Not only this, but of the six DBR9's that started, all completed the race taking 3rd, 4th, 6th 10th and 13th place in class - a finishing record almost unheard of at Le Mans.
