Le Mans Legends, Thursday practice

It is now customary for the main race to be supported by a race, usually reflecting a particular era of Le Mans from the past. This years Le Mans Legends race covered the period 1956 to 1968. Thus to accompany the exceptional range of race Astons, the track was filled with D types, Ford GT40's, Maserati Birdcages, Morgan Plus 4's and other exotic historic machinery. The turnout of six ultimate race Astons was a real spectacle. Obviously most significant were the two DBR1's, DBR1/2 which won overall in 1959 (race number 5)  and DBR1/4 which came second (race number 6). DBR1/2 was being driven by Dr Bez, AM CEO with Sir Stirling Moss and /4 by Adrian Beecroft and David Hall. Joining the DBR1's were three DB4 GT's. two standard bodied cars DB4GT/0122 (race number 20) and what I believe may be /0133 (race number 32) together with DB4GT/0148 (race number 2) , the DB GT recently re-bodied as a Zagato. Also something of a curiosity was a very accurate replica of Project Car, DP214 (race number 18), first seen in finished form at the AMOC concourse in Spring 2006.

Thursday Night 2nd Qualifying practice session

The session started a half an hour late due to clean-up work on the track needed following the LM Legends practice. This was perhaps fortunate since at the same time, a huge shower cloud headed towards the previously dry circuit. The track remained very wet throughout both halves of the session due to the torrential rain and lap times were initially significantly lower than the previous night. As the track conditions improved late in the session, several drivers opted for qualifying tyres and improved on their session times. All this practice in wet conditions would prove invaluable during the race which was already predicted to be in changeable conditions.

So, AMR Larbre Competition DBR9 number 008, with it's fastest qualifying time from Wednesday gained pole position in GT1. The rest of the Astons started as follows, AMR car 009 - 4th, Team Modena 59 - 6th, AMR BMS 100 - 8th, AMR 007 - 10th, with the final AMR Larbre Comp. car, number 006 - 15th.
