Friday - Pit lane walkabout

On Friday there is no on-track action at all. The teams spend all day checking and rebuilding the cars for the next days race. The public are admitted to the pit lane for most of the day to see the work in progress. Often the cars are quite hidden in the pit garages, often no more than a bare chassis. So as to give the public something to see, they arrange the body panels on the apron in front of the cars. If you look at the Italian DBR9, you can see that the team have assembled a completely empty shell of body panels - quite convincing and effective.

Meanwhile, in the paddock. AMR had their hospitality facility complete with both a DBR9 and a DBRS9. The DBR9 was in fact chassis 106, a private car dressed up as a works one. The DBRS9 was chassis 101, the prototype that was first shown at Le Mans 2005, with striking black/white coachwork - something to do with the Sony Playstation PSP.

Classic British Welcome, Saint Saturnin, featuring Aston Martin

These photograph were taken at the 2006 Classic British Welcome at a village called Saint Saturnin just North of Le Mans town. It's a free event held each year just before the the 24 hour race with displays of classics (2006 was Astons year) food, a bar, entertainment. The AMHT took A3, the earliest AM over for the event with it's new black paint job. Highly recommended to gently introduce you to the race weekend of the year.

Parade des Pilots, Le Mans Town Centre

On the evening before the race, many people head for the centre of town to the Parade des Pilots (that's Drivers Parade for those of you who don't speak French!). Brilliant event full of atmosphere which fills the centre with 100,000's of people, all the drivers parading round in pre-war open top cars, supercars, classic cars, marching bands and the Hawaiian Tropic Girls of course. Tomas Enge was again presented with a trophy as fastest qualifying GT car. A brilliant opportunity to get drivers autographs especially in a bit of town where the 'old-timers' have a hill to climb and the driver have to jump out and walk. This year, the AMOC was asked to participate with a broad selection of cars.
