Saturday - The Race Build-up
Crowds begin to gather early to not just to get a good place to watch the start but the warm-up, support race, drivers parade and formation of the grid. This year, the Classic Le Mans support race featured the awesome Group C cars of the mid to late 1980's, arguably the most spectacular cars ever to race on the historic circuit. For us, Group C means the AMR1. Sadly, despite skilful handling by the driver, Paul Wright, the AMR1 failed to finish.
From 1200 the cars are traditionally rolled out onto the pre-grid formation - best described as in 'ear-of-corn' formation along the pit wall. As is also traditional, the Hawaiian Tropic girls are also in attendance. By around 14.00 the cars circulate slowly for one lap and then form the grid. 14.52, the green flag is shown and the cars begin their formation lap. This is scheduled to take 8 minutes by which time the cars at the head of the grid will pass the start/finish line at 15.00 precisely.
